Nancy’s Success Story

Nancy had moved from Wisconsin to Ottumwa, Iowa with a boyfriend.  She had begun having relationship problems with the boyfriend and they broke up.  At this time Nancy was homeless and without money to relocate to a different home or even go back to Wisconsin.  She came to Burlington and was accepted at the Burlington Area Homeless Shelter.  Nancy found work at a factory pretty quickly upon arriving at the Shelter.  Nancy had a personal vehicle when she arrived but she was behind on payments and in fear of losing her only mode of transportation.  Throughout her stay at the Shelter, she was able to get caught up on her car payments and save money.  Nancy was able to move into her own apartment after staying at the Shelter for  months.  She then got a better paying job at another factory.  She then wanted to apply for a foreman position that was available at the factory but she didn’t have a resume and didn’t know how to create one on her own due to literacy issues.  Nancy reached out to the Shelter to inquire about getting help with creating a resume.  We partnered with Nancy to help create her resume.  Nancy called us a couple weeks after she applied for the position to tell us the good news, she got the foreman position.  She was so excited and grateful for all the help the Shelter had given her.  Nancy has continued to excel at her job and in life.  She was even able to get into a rental home from her apartment.  She is now living her best life in a house, with a good job and a few fur babies to come home to.
